Question: What is the role of mound‐building ants (Lasius flavus) in successional changes of a grassland ecosystem towards a spruce forest? Location: Slovenské Rudohorie Mountains, Slovakia; ca. 950 m a.s.l. near the Obrubovanec point (1020 m a.s.l.; 48°41′N, 19°39′E). Methods: Both chronosequence data along a successional gradient and temporal data from long‐term permanent plots were collected on ants, spruce establishment, and vegetation structure, together with additional data on spruce growth. Results: There are more spruce seedlings on ant mounds (4.72 m?2) than in the surrounding vegetation (0.81 m?2). Spruce seedlings grow faster on these mounds compared to surrounding areas. The first colonization wave of seedlings was rapid and probably occurred when grazing prevailed over mowing. Ant colony presence, mound volume, and plant species composition change along the successional gradient. Mounds become bigger when partly shaded but shrink in closed forest, when ant colonies disappear. Shade‐tolerant acidophylic species replace grassland plants both on the mounds and in surrounding areas. Conclusions: The massive occurrence of Lasius flavus anthills contributes to a runaway feedback process that accelerates succession towards forest. The effect of ants as ecosystem engineers is scale‐dependent: although they stabilize the system at the scale of an individual mound, they may destabilize the whole grassland system over a longer time scale if combined with changes in mowing regime.  相似文献

Questions: Trait differentiation among species occurs at different spatial scales within a region. How does the partitioning of functional diversity help to identify different community assembly mechanisms? Location: Northeastern Spain. Methods: Functional diversity can be partitioned into within‐community (α) and among‐communities (β) components, in analogy to Whittaker's classical α and β species diversity concept. In light of ecological null models, we test and discuss two algorithms as a framework to measure α and β functional diversity (the Rao quadratic entropy index and the variance of trait values). Species and trait (specific leaf area) data from pastures under different climatic conditions in NE Spain are used as a case study. Results: The proposed indices show different mathematical properties but similarly account for the spatial components of functional diversity. For all vegetation types along the climatic gradient, the observed α functional diversity was lower than expected at random, an observation consistent with the hypothesis of trait convergence resulting from habitat filtering. On the other hand, our data exhibited a remarkably higher functional diversity within communities compared to among communities (α?β). In contrast to the high species turnover, there was a limited functional diversity turnover among communities, and a large part of the trait divergence occurred among coexisting species. Conclusions: Partitioning functional diversity within and among communities revealed that both trait convergence and divergence occur in the formation of assemblages from the local species pool. A considerable trait convergence exists at the regional scale in spite of changes in species composition, suggesting the existence of ecological redundancy among communities.  相似文献

The assessment and monitoring of the tissue perfusion is extremely important in critical conditions involving circulatory shock. There is a wide range of established methods for the assessment of cardiac output as a surrogate of oxygen delivery to the peripheral tissues. However, the evaluation of whether particular oxygen delivery is sufficient to ensure cellular metabolic demands is more challenging. In recent years, specific biochemical parameters have been described to indicate the status between tissue oxygen demands and supply. In this review, the authors summarize the application of some of these biochemical markers, including mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2), lactate, central venous–arterial carbon dioxide difference (PCO2 gap), and PCO2 gap/central arterial-to-venous oxygen difference (Ca–vO2) for hemodynamic assessment of tissue perfusion. The thorough monitoring of the adequacy of tissue perfusion and oxygen supply in critical conditions is essential for the selection of the most appropriate therapeutic strategy and it is associated with improved clinical outcomes.

Atopy is a predisposition to hyperproduction of immunoglobulin E (IgE) against common environmental allergens. It is often associated with development of allergic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, and dermatitis. Production of IgE is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. In spite of progress in the study of heredity of atopy, the genetic mechanisms of IgE regulation have not yet been completely elucidated. The analysis of complex traits can benefit considerably from integration of human and mouse genetics. Previously, we mapped a mouse IgE-controlling locus Lmr9 on chromosome 4 to a segment of <9 Mb. In this study, we tested levels of total IgE and 25 specific IgEs against inhalant and food allergens in 67 Czech atopic families. In the position homologous to Lmr9 on chromosome 8q12 marked by D8S285, we demonstrated a novel human IgE-controlling locus exhibiting suggestive linkage to composite inhalant allergic sensitization (limit of detection, LOD = 2.11, P = 0.0009) and to nine specific IgEs, with maximum LOD (LOD = 2.42, P = 0.0004) to plantain. We also tested 16 markers at previously reported chromosomal regions of atopy. Linkage to plant allergens exceeding the LOD > 2.0 was detected at 5q33 (D5S1507, LOD = 2.11, P = 0.0009) and 13q14 (D13S165, LOD = 2.74, P = 0.0002). The significant association with plant allergens (quantitative and discrete traits) was found at 7p14 (D7S2250, corrected P = 0.026) and 12q13 (D12S1298, corrected P = 0.043). Thus, the finding of linkage on chromosome 8q12 shows precision and predictive power of mouse models in the investigation of complex traits in humans. Our results also confirm the role of loci at 5q33, 7p14, 12q14, and 13q13 in control of IgE. Light microscopy of native preparations, histology, and electron microscopy have revealed that Phlebotomus duboscqi belongs to a class of sand fly species with prompt development of the peritrophic matrix (PM). Secretion of electron-lucent fibrils, presumably chitin, starts immediately after the ingestion of a blood meal and, about 6 h later, is followed by secretion of amorphous electron-dense components, presumably proteins and glycoproteins. The PM matures in less than 12 h and consists of a thin laminar outer layer and a thick amorphous inner layer. No differences have been found in the timing of the disintegration of the PM in females infected with Leishmania major. In both groups of females (infected and uninfected), the disintegration of the PM is initiated at the posterior end. Although parasites are present at high densities in the anterior part of the blood meal bolus, they escape from the PM at the posterior end only. These results suggest that L. major chitinase does not have an important role in parasite escape from the PM. Promastigotes remain in the intraperitrophic space until the PM is broken down by sand-fly-derived chitinases and only then migrate anteriorly. Disintegration of the PM occurs simultaneously with the morphological transformation of parasites from procyclic forms to long nectomonads. A novel role is ascribed to the anterior plug, a component of the PM secreted by the thoracic midgut; this plug functions as a temporary barrier to stop the forward migration of nectomonads to the thoracic midgut. In leaves of birch (Betula pendula Roth), changes in the content of total sulphur and its inorganic and organic forms were determined in relation to the decreasing air-pollution load (SO2) in the air-polluted Krusne hory mountains and the Decin sandstone highlands in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Results have shown that birch is able to use considerable amounts of sulphur taken through leaves from air-pollution load. Birch responds fast to changes in air-pollution load by fall in the content of total and inorganic forms of sulphur in leaves.  相似文献
